If you’ve ever visited a church and thought, “Do I need to have it all together to belong?” you’re not alone. It’s a common misconception that we have to be “advanced” in our spiritual journey to truly fit in at a church.
Yet that couldn’t be further from the truth, especially at our local church. When you visit Lakeland Community Church, you are welcome, just as you are. We often describe Lakeland as a place for the curious, the faithful and devoted, the doubtful, and even those who may have been hurt by a church experience in the past.
No matter where you are on your spiritual journey, Jesus always meets you right where you are, and so does our church community. If Jesus had waited to find disciples who were “perfect,” he may not have found twelve.

“Belonging and Becoming” at Our Lee’s Summit Church
“Belonging and becoming who we are in Jesus” — this is Lakeland Community Church’s mission statement. Notice that it isn’t “to belong and become.” Belonging and becoming are processes that always happen in the present tense. No one is ever expected to master the art of belonging and becoming who they are in Jesus.
A sense of belonging is a process that evolves as we evolve. When you first attend a church service near you, your sense of belonging might come from being welcomed at the door or worshipping with the congregation. It might be a smile from a familiar, friendly face. Later, belonging might be service work, getting involved in a ministry, or finding church events for your whole family to attend. Belonging may likely include helping others to belong. It’s never a one-and-done action.
Becoming who we are in Jesus is also the work of a lifetime. Your spiritual journey twists and turns as your life twists and turns. New experiences, both rewarding and challenging, continue to deepen your understanding of being a Christian.
Notice, too, that our vision is about becoming who we are. We want you to be your authentic self in Jesus, whoever that may be. And as you become, you will always belong.

“Building an authentic community of followers of Jesus Christ” is the vision statement for our local church near you. An authentic community is one that engages with each other in real relationships. Our community grows together through groups, ministries, contemplation, and, of course, worship services. We share our doubts, feelings, hopes, and goals. We also engage our community beyond our local church through genuine, Christ-like love and service.
