How Contemplation and Ministries Guide our Lenten Walk

The core of contemplation is love. During this season of Lent, we invite ourselves into the contemplative practice of exploring “the Un-ing Life”—unflattering our souls and uncovering what God has for us.

In other words, contemplation is more about “uncluttering and uncovering” rather than adding.  It is the holy process of stripping away the noise so we can become more aware and attuned to the Kingdom of God dwelling within us.

Contemplative Practices at Your Local Church

At Lakeland Community Church, contemplation isn’t just a seasonal activity; it’s one of our core values. We believe that by slowing down, we create space for the Holy Spirit to speak.

Therefore, to cultivate a contemplative life at a church in Lee’s Summit, we integrate these practices: silence and solitude, breath prayers, prayer beads, Lectio Divina, and Visio Divina.

Join a Community of “Slowing Down”

Faith was never meant to be a solo journey. If you are looking for a community to help you navigate this process of “becoming,” here are a few ways to get involved at your local church this season:

Guided Through the Wilderness. Join us once a month as we take a contemplative walk on a local trail. We start each walk with a brief reading to inspire contemplation, then we walk along the trail, journal our thoughts, and come together to pray with the group. You can find more information on Guided Through the Wilderness here.

Women’s Contemplative Retreat. As part of Lakeland Community’s “At the Well” Women’s Ministry, this year-long cycle helps women create a rhythm of life that deepens and grows more consistent to God. You can find more information on Women’s Contemplative Retreats here.

Encountering Contemplation. A two-day contemplative retreat designed for those who are new to the practice of contemplation, as well as veterans who are seeking space for personal growth and reflection. More information about Encountering Contemplation can be found here.

Lectio Divina. A simple, but powerful, rhythm of engaging with Scripture. Join us every week as we move through four movements: reading the passage slowly, reflecting through journaling, responding in prayer, and resting in contemplation. You can find more information on Lectio Divina here.

We’re Holding a Spot for You

However you choose to engage in this Lenten season, know that you don’t have to do it alone. At Lakeland Community Church, our doors are open to everyone—no matter where you are on your spiritual journey or how many questions you may have.

Come as you are, and let’s uncover the heart of God together.

Join us on Sundays @ 10:30AM!
