“I just love the people at Lakeland.”
Meet Wendy Calvert, an active Lakelander with a bright smile and an adventurous spirit. When Wendy sits with us, gold earrings sparkle on her ears, partially hidden by her shoulder-length blonde bob. Dressed in a green-striped shirt, blue jeans and sandals, she exudes relaxed confidence.
Pastor Marta, the pastor who leads our My Story team, sits on the couch in Lakeland’s lobby and asks Wendy to share how she found out about Lakeland.
“Tracy and Sean, someone told them about Lakeland. Sean and Tracy invited me.” She pauses and tilts her head to the side, remembering the start of her journey. “It just seemed real,” she finally says with a small, contented smile. “There was no judgment. Everyone was just being themselves. I really enjoyed Dan Wilburn’s messages. You can tell that he and Garrett both really earnestly look through what God is trying to do here. I don’t get that feeling a lot from other churches. It just seems like they’re doing the prescribed message for that day or month, and it’s in the Bible. All of their stuff is in the Bible, teaching the Bible.”
While Wendy fell in love with the people of Lakeland and how much the church’s leaders invest in their roles of serving their community, she also came to realize how much she wanted to contribute her own talents, too.
Marta points out that Wendy has a diverse range of interests at Lakeland. Wendy chuckles. “Yes, I serve in the Tech Booth, do performance video and sometimes I help with stage tech.”
“And the retreats!” Marta reminds her with a smile.
Wendy nods. “Yes, I also co-lead away retreats.”
As we learn more about Wendy and her life, one theme continues to appear in Wendy’s answers, one that makes us smile and joyful:
“I just love the people at Lakeland. Everyone that seems to be drawn to Lakeland, I want to live by them or get to know them. It’s just a great group of people.”
“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the day drawing near.”
